Production Editor

The Production Editor edits new resources accurately and efficiently according to Solution Tree Press house style, Chicago Manual Style, and American Psychological Association reference style. The Production Editor works closely with authors and specializes in project management; developmental editing, including restructuring and rewriting text as needed; asking probing queries to ensure accuracy and clarity; and copyediting for final polish. The Production Editor is deeply involved in the entire production process, including preparing files for formatting, correcting text design, ensuring print quality, and checking printer proofs. The Production Editor ensures the highest quality finished book.

Summary of essential job functions

  • Edits manuscripts according to Solution Tree Press house style, Chicago Manual Style, and American Psychological Association reference style within the timeline established on the editorial schedule
  • Works closely with authors to maintain good relationships and to create the best quality product
  • Starts and maintains a style sheet for each project that includes capitalization, italicization, hyphenation, and spelling rules for specific words, terms, and phrases
  • Communicates with the Associate Publisher, Managing Editor, Senior Editors, other Production Editors, Copy Editors, or Project Manager as necessary regarding style, content, and book structure of edited projects
  • Contributes to additional tasks when needed
  • Attends all weekly department meetings, department retreats, and company retreats; actively participates in departmental discussions of ways to improve our house style and process
  • Responds to Associate Publisher guidance on editorial skills to improve

Minimum requirements

College degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience of developmental editing books in a supervised publishing setting is required. Knowledge of CMS, book structure, and the publishing process are essential. APA familiarity is a plus. Demonstrated proficiency in editing on the editorial test. Proficiency in Word and Outlook, willingness and ability to learn to use specialized editing tools. Strong communication skills and a proactive editorial approach are essential.
